Christ the Lord is risen today!  Happy Easter!

In 2015 I wrote an Easter musical for my church.  I wanted to share it here on my blog, but it’s too big and it won’t upload, so I had to resort to YouTube.  Because the sound and camera quality is not the greatest (it was 2015), here’s the script for you to follow along.

True Love

Scene 1
BAND/CHOIR: True Love
Come close, listen to the story
About a love more faithful than the morning
The Father gave His only Son just to save us

The earth was shaking in the dark
All creation felt the Father’s broken heart
Tears were filling Heaven’s eyes
The day that true love died
The day that true love died
Music segues into:

ESTHER (Sings): Just Another Birthday (Backlit/silhouette of actors)

Sixteen finds me
Blowing out candles and making wishes
And all around me
Is everyone but the one I’m wishing for
And he sent me flowers
And gift-wrapped excuses
From a daddy whose daughter
Wants to see him again

And I know, I know
It’s just another birthday
But I guess I thought
This would be the one
When he would call me, see me
Hold me and free me
But it’s just another birthday

And I’ll be fine
I’ll be fine

Nineteen finds me
And I’m wild-eyed and wide open
I gave myself away to love
But backseat promises fade like a mist
I’m screaming at the midnight air
Everyone hears me but I don’t care
My heart’s clenched just like a fist
‘Cause, people, I didn’t ask for any of this

And I know, I know
It’s just another birthday
But I guess I thought
This would be the one
When he would call me, see me
Hold me and free me
But it’s just another birthday

And I’m not fine
I’m not fine

In the company of strangers
In a cold and sterile room
All alone with a child inside me
And I don’t know what to do
Jesus, can You hear me
Come and heal my brokenness
Put the pieces back together
And be a Father to the fatherless

A Father to the fatherless

Twenty-one finds me
Blowing out candles and making wishes
And all around me
My barefoot princess twirls and sings
It’s so amazing
Looking back at all God’s brought us through
You are my happy birthday
And you were born to break the chains

Now I know, I know
It’s not just another birthday
‘Cause I’m here, she’s here
And look how far we’ve come
Since you’ve called me, saw me
Held me and freed me
Thank you, Lord, for another birthday
And we’ll be fine
We’ll be fine

Lights fade on Esther and Amy as they come up on Mary and Jesus in the Nativity scene during:

ESTHER & MARY (Cooing to their children): I love you, my precious baby, my beautiful child.

MARY (Sings): You’re Here
Hold on now, got to take a deep breath
I don’t know what to say when I look in your eyes
You made the world before I was born
And here I am holding you in my arms tonight

Noel, Noel
Jesus our Emmanuel

You’re here, I’m holding you so near
I’m staring into the face of my Savior
King and Creator
You could of left us on our own
But you’re here

I don’t know how long I’m going to have you for
But I’ll be watching when you change the world
Look at your hands, they’re still so small
Someday you’re going
To stretch them out and save us all

Noel, Noel
God with us, Emmanuel

You’re here, I’m holding you so near, oh, oh
I’m staring into the face of my Savior
King and Creator
You could of left us on our own
But you’re here, you’re here

Someday I’m going to look back on this
The night that God became a baby boy
Someday you’re going to go home again
But you’ll leave your spirit
And flood the world with joy

You’ll be here, I’m holding you so near, oh, oh
I’m staring into the face of my Savior
King and Creator
You could of left me on my own
But you’re here, You’re here

Hallelujah, You’re here
Hallelujah, You’re here

Scene 2

Lights fade on Mary and Jesus, up on Esther and 17-year-old Amy.

ESTHER (hugging Amy): I wish you weren’t going, Amy. I’ll really miss you. You know I’ll always love you, right? And God loves you too.

AMY (Rolling her eyes and pulling away): Please Mom. I know you love me, but save the God stuff. This is something I want to do, I have to do. I’ll call you when I get there. Exits.

Video of Amy’s misadventures as Esther sings:

ESTHER: Make A Way
She was only 17
Wild at heart and following her dreams
Believing she was pretty
Got a ticket to the city
Where she’d find her place on the cover of a magazine

It was only a website, but it would lead the way
To the door of a man where she’d throw it all away
He said they’d take it slow
But little did she know
She’d be all used up by the end of the day

But she was strong
And she would survive
Ambition would be her drive
And she said…

I’ll make a way
I’ll do whatever it takes
Even though it won’t be easy
I have a plan and though I may not understand
Someday, I’ll make a way

Where did she go wrong, how did she get here?
Livin’ hard and looking older than her years
Miss Little Big Town
Trying to hold a job down
Doing what she could to choke her fears
But she was strong
And she would survive
A spark of hope had kept her dream alive
And she cried…

I’ll make a way
I’ll do whatever it takes
Even though it won’t be easy
I have a plan and though I may not understand
Someday, I’ll make a way
Video ends as Esther kneels and sings
So I bow my head to pray
And say, “Jesus, please make a way

Please make a way
Please do whatever it takes
Even though it won’t be easy.
You have a plan and though I may not understand
Someday, please make a way.
Someday, please make a way.

Esther sits at table in their kitchen SL, Amy paces around the table.

AMY (frustrated): I don’t get it. I have more talent than most of those other girls. I can’t believe the stupid designer didn’t choose me. I was not supposed to be a no-name waitress in a diner. I had plans, I had the right contacts. What happened?

ESTHER: I don’t know honey. Maybe God had other plans.

AMY: Whatever. Anyway, thanks for letting me come home. That jerk landlord probably won’t even give me my deposit back.

ESTHER: This will always be your home and I love having you here. I know I haven’t always been the best example, but trust God, Amy; He does love you and has a plan for you.

AMY: Mom, talking about God only causes problems between us. I’ve told you I don’t need God like you need Him. I’m sorry, but honestly, I’m stronger than you are or ever were and I know what I need and it isn’t God. So just to keep things peaceful between us how about we don’t say anything about God ever, deal?

ESTHER: Alright, with one stipulation. I’ll never bring up God again if you agree to come to church and listen to Pastor Adam one Sunday. Just once.

AMY: Do you really think dragging me to church one more time is going to change anything? Besides – Pastor Adam? I thought you had a Pastor Steve or something like that.

ESTHER: Pastor Steve retired and Adam came a few months ago. He’s really good.
Scene 3

ESTHER & SAMARITAN WOMAN: Just come, listen to what he has to say. You won’t be sorry, I promise.

AMY: Ok, fine.

Lights fade on Esther and Amy, up on Jesus teaching.

BAND/CHOIR: Come as You Are

Come out of sadness
From wherever you’ve been
Come broken hearted
Let rescue begin
Come find your mercy
Oh sinner come kneel
Earth has no sorrow
That heaven can’t heal
Earth has no sorrow
That heaven can’t heal

So lay down your burdens
Lay down your shame
All who are broken
Lift up your face
Oh wanderer come home
You’re not too far
So lay down your hurt
Lay down your heart
Come as you are

There’s hope for the hopeless
And all those who’ve strayed
Come sit at the table
Come taste the grace
There’s rest for the weary
Rest that endures
Earth has no sorrow
That heaven can’t cure
So lay down your burdens
Lay down your shame
All who are broken
Lift up your face
Oh wanderer come home
You’re not too far
So lay down your hurt
Lay down your heart
Come as you are
Come as you are
Fall in his arms
Come as you are
There’s joy for the morning
Oh sinner be still
Earth has no sorrow
That heaven can’t heal
Earth has no sorrow
That heaven can’t heal

So lay down your burdens
Lay down your shame
All who are broken
Lift up your face
Oh wanderer come home
You’re not too far
So lay down your hurt
Lay down your heart
Come as you are
Come as you are
Come as you are

During the song Esther and Amy enter from rear sanctuary doors and find a place to sit towards the front – may be slightly noisy about it and draw people’s attention to the fact they’re there.

Lights up on Tina at pulpit SL at end of song.

TINA (Reading from her Bible): Jesus said

TINA & JESUS (Continuing to teach): “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

Lights fade on Jesus and crowd.

PASTOR ADAM: Thank you Tina. Please open your Bibles to Matthew 10:29-31. To find the greatest satisfaction and fulfillment in life we must have our lives rooted in Christ. We must depend on Him for everything, just as a branch depends on the vine for its very life. We must make Jesus the Lord of our lives and follow His leading both in the big things of life and the everyday matters that concerns us. You may think something is too small and petty for God’s notice but that’s not true. Jesus said in Matthew 10:29-31 “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” Surrender your life to Him, the one who knows you inside and out and trust that He has a plan for you to display His glory in some way.

BAND/CHOIR: Reprise Come as You Are
So lay down your burdens
Lay down your shame
All who are broken
Lift up your face
Oh wanderer come home
You’re not too far
So lay down your hurt
Lay down your heart
Come as you are
Come as you are
Come as you are

PASTOR ADAM: (Invites people to take their seats, prays a dismissal prayer)

Lights down on stage, up on congregation as Esther and Amy stand and make their way to the stage where parishioners are filing out, shaking Pastor Adam’s hand.

ESTHER (Eagerly): So, what did you think?

AMY (Non-committal): It was ok – music was different than when I was little. Look, I’m not a Christian any more now than I was before and I’m not likely to become one because of one sermon. I will admit that Pastor Adam is kind of cute though.

ESTHER (Huffs good-naturedly): Oh Amy. (They reach Pastor Adam). Good sermon, Pastor.

PASTOR ADAM: Thank you.

ESTHER: This is my daughter, Amy.

PASTOR ADAM (Shakes Amy’s hand): Nice to meet you Amy, I’ve heard quite a bit about you.

AMY: Really? Probably the truth if what you heard came from my mom.

ESTHER (quickly): I’ve just mentioned you once or twice in Bible study, that’s all.

AMY (Sarcastically): You asked everyone to pray for the salvation of your wicked wayward daughter, didn’t you? (Starts moving off stage).

PASTOR ADAM (catches her arm): Amy, you might think I’m the weirdest guy on earth after this, but I think you need to hear that God really does care about you. He truly loves you like a father loves his daughter.

(Amy stares at him a second, then shakes free and runs offstage, followed by Esther)

Lights fade on SL

BAND/CHOIR:
Search your heart, you know you can’t deny it
Come on, lose your life just so you can find it
The Father gave His only Son just to save us
Scene 4

Lights up on Esther and Amy sitting at their table. Both are visibly shaken. Pause.

AMY: I don’t even feel that bad, Mom. It was just a little lump, nothing to worry about I thought. But now they say it’s everywhere. (Stands) I can’t have cancer Mom, I just can’t!

ESTHER: I don’t know what to say honey, except I’ll be with you every step. We’ll get through this together.

AMY: (Hugs Esther from behind) Thanks Mom. You’ve always been there for me. The one thing I can count on in life.

ESTHER: I’m really tempted to say something about God right now, Amy, but I know you don’t want to hear it.

AMY: You were going to say that I can always count on God, weren’t you? (Esther nods) (Amy’s voice rises throughout until she is yelling.) Then where was He when I couldn’t get that job? Or when I got fired and thrown out of my apartment? And when your mom threw you out of her house when you got pregnant with me? And when I was born with no dad around? And how can He be such a good God anyway when there’s so much bad stuff in the world like cancer? (She storms offstage).

ESTHER: (Slides to knees and prays) Father God, why would you do this? I don’t understand. If it’s to draw her to you, then I thank you for it but I don’t get it either. You’re in control God. Keep working on Amy’s heart. And please, God, heal her. Don’t take my Amy away from me. (Breaks down crying).

(Lights fade on Esther and up on Jesus, who is in the same position as Esther, Mary (who is crying) Martha, and many other people, including Caiaphas and other members of the Sanhedrin.)

MARY: Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

JESUS: (weeping). Take away the stone!

MARTHA: (Also moved, but controlling her emotions) But Lord, by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.

JESUS: Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God? (Looks up) Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me. (Looks down aisle, says in a loud voice) Lazarus, come out! (People around Jesus marvel as Lazarus emerges from the rear center doors; Mary & Martha scream and run towards Lazarus as Jesus says with joy:) Take off the grave clothes and let him go. (Jesus and the adoring throng leave stage and go with Mary, Martha, & Lazarus out the rear center doors. Focus shifts to Caiaphas and Sanhedrin members).

PHARISEE: What are we accomplishing? Here is this man performing many miraculous signs. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.

CAIAPHAS: You know nothing at all! You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.

PHARISEE: (As group moves offstage). So what can be done to rid us of this man?

CAIAPHAS: We must find someone to inform us of Jesus’ movements.

BAND/CHOIR:
The earth was shaking in the dark
All creation felt the Father’s broken heart
Tears were filling Heaven’s eyes
The day that true love died
The day that true love died
Scene 5

(Lights up on Amy, lying in a hospital bed & Esther sitting next to her. Amy looks pale & sick and is wearing a hat.

AMY: (Weakly) I’m thirsty Mom.

ESTHER: (Holding a glass so Amy can drink) Here you go sweetheart.

AMY: I don’t feel good Mom.

ESTHER: I know. If I could make you feel better I would.

AMY: I don’t think anything could make me feel better right now.

PASTOR ADAM: (Poking his head in from offstage) Knock knock. (Comes in carrying a bouquet of flowers). How are you doing Amy, Esther?

ESTHER: (Stands and moves around the bed to take the flowers). Come in, come in! My those are gorgeous flowers! (Lowers her voice). It’s been a rough few days, Pastor. She’s been sick a lot.

PASTOR ADAM: I’m sorry to hear that. (Moves to the bed and takes Amy’s hand). Hi Amy, I hear you’re not feeling so great.

AMY: Yeah. Although having a cute guy bring me flowers never hurts. (Adam ducks his head and pulls his hand back, embarrassed.) Relax Pastor, I’ll quit making you uncomfortable. Can I ask you something?

PASTOR ADAM: Sure, anything.

AMY: I know Jesus died on a cross. I’ve never understood why that was a big deal. Why did he die?

PASTOR ADAM: (Stammers a bit at the unexpectedness of the question, but knows his answer) Uh…well…ok. I’ll answer the second question first. He died for you, Amy.

AMY: Yeah, right. Um, no He didn’t. Because if I remember what Mom said once correctly, He died over 2000 years ago. There’s no way something that happened 2000 years ago was for me, now.

PASTOR ADAM: (Again, taken aback at her abruptness. Moves to take the chair Esther offers. Esther goes offstage and returns with a vase for the flowers and starts arranging them while listening). It’s the truth, whether you believe it or not. But maybe I should answer the first question first, that might help you understand the why better. The night before Jesus was killed He had a last supper with His disciples. At the supper He told them some things they wanted to hear, but mostly things they didn’t want to hear and didn’t understand. He said

(Lights up on Jesus at the Last Supper & Pastor Adam as they say:)

JESUS & PASTOR ADAM: My children, I will be with you only a little longer. (Pastor Adam fades out, modern scene freezes) You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: where I am going you cannot come. A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

PETER: Lord, where are you going?

JESUS: Where I am going you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.

PETER: Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.

JESUS: Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times! Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you; I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.

THOMAS: Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?

JESUS: I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father and I too will love him and show myself to him. All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on me, but the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me. Come now, let us leave.

(Lights switch from Jesus & disciples to Amy’s hospital room)

PASTOR ADAM: They went to the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus prayed for Himself, His disciples, and for all believers, even the ones that wouldn’t believe in Jesus for another 2000 years. (Amy smiles weakly). Jesus asked His disciples to watch and pray with Him, but they fell asleep. Jesus was in anguish, alone, and knowing what was facing Him in a few hours.

ESTHER: Pastor, I hate to interrupt, but you’ve been at it awhile. Amy, should we take a break, let you rest a little?

AMY: (Not even opening her eyes) Yeah, maybe. Come back in a little bit though, alright?

PASTOR ADAM: I will. Rest well. (Esther and Pastor Adam leave).

AMY: (Silent for a few moments. Then peeks an eye open to make sure they’re gone.) Jesus, I don’t think I’ve ever seriously talked to you before. I’m dying. And I know you died too, so I figure we have something in common. I’m scared. And even when my mom is with me I feel alone. Are you there? (Sings)

God, can you hear me? I beg you, can you hear me?
I’m not the kind of girl who prays. How can I follow this Jesus?
Can I follow? But can I turn and walk away? Tonight I lay here all alone.
Somewhere between this man and the only life I’ve known.

I’ve never felt so all alone. I feel my heart inside me breaking.
How long must I endure this pain? And still my spirit goes on aching.
Oh God, please hear my prayer.
I need to know that you are there.
I’ve never felt so all alone.

(Lights up on Jesus in the garden, prone disciples scattered about)

JESUS: (sings)
Brothers, are you sleeping? My friends, are you sleeping?
Could you not watch one hour in prayer?
Father, I am grieving, in anguish I am grieving.
This cup is far too great to bear!
Oh God, I long to do your will.
I know you’ll never leave your only Son but still.

JESUS & AMY:
I’ve never felt so all alone. (Echo)
I feel my heart inside me breaking. (Echo)
How long must I endure this pain? (Echo, etc.)
And still my spirit goes on aching.
Oh God, please hear my prayer.
I need to know that you are there.
I’ve never felt so all alone.
Scene 6

(Lights fade on Jesus, change on Amy to indicate passage of time. Pastor Adam and Esther slip back in, and Pastor Adam continues like he’s been talking for some time again. Amy is more alert and listening intently with a different hat on. Esther is sitting in an additional chair.)

PASTOR ADAM: Jesus was betrayed by Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples. He was taken before the high priest, the one who said it would be better that one man died for the people. He was sent to the Romans, who had Him beaten.

AMY: (Interrupts) What about Peter, the one who said he would never leave Jesus. Did he? Or did he stay with Jesus?

PASTOR ADAM: No, Peter denied that he knew Jesus three times. Then the rooster crowed and Peter remembered that Jesus had known what he would do. Peter was deeply ashamed and the Bible says he wept bitterly. No, Jesus was alone when He was flogged, when He appeared before Pilate, when the crowds demanded His crucifixion.

AMY: What is ‘crucifixion’ anyway? Was it really that bad? Was it worse than cancer? ‘Cause I’ll admit, I’ve been hitting that morphine pretty hard lately.

PASTOR ADAM: It was worse. It was designed to inflict the maximum amount of pain on a person for the longest amount of time. And there was no morphine. They had stakes driven through their wrists and feet into a cross, which was raised up in the air. The position they were in made it extremely hard to breathe – their lungs were actually filling with fluid the longer they hung there. The only support they had to hold themselves up to breathe was to push against the stakes in their feet and you can only imagine how excruciating that was.

AMY: Ok, that’s enough detail for me. It hurt, I get it. Then what?

PASTOR ADAM: He died. And in doing so, He took the sins of the world on His shoulders.

AMY: That’s the part I don’t get. How and why?

PASTOR ADAM: Amy, have you ever done anything wrong?

AMY: Yes. Move on please.

PASTOR ADAM: Did you ever have to do anything to make it right? Like if you lied to your mom did she make you apologize and tell the truth, or if you took something did you have to give it back?

AMY: Of course.

PASTOR ADAM: You had to do that because you had offended her, right?

AMY: Yeah. But she always forgave me, right Mom?

ESTHER: Of course I did.

PASTOR ADAM: That’s because she loves you. God is like a parent. When we sin, it offends Him and we have to do something to make it right. Except, God is so deeply offended by sin because He is holy, that the only thing that will make it right is the death of the offender. Because He is also merciful and loving, He allows a substitute to take the place of the offender. In the Old Testament He told them to use animals as sacrifices. But when Jesus died, He volunteered to be everybody’s substitute for all time – which He could do because He was also God. It was the ultimate act of true love. The Bible says “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” But Jesus even died for people who hate Him and want nothing to do with Him. That’s true love and that’s why it matters to you. You can accept His sacrifice for you or not. Regardless of what you choose you will live forever – either in heaven, with God, or in hell, condemned to live without God for all eternity. What do you think?

AMY: Pastor, I’ve been so angry with God for so long. Nothing in my life has gone according to plan. I may have semi-trusted Him when I was little, but ever since my whole life has just been one bad thing after another. Maybe I’m still just too angry.

PASTOR ADAM: Give your anger to God. Tell Him you’ve been angry – He’s big enough to handle it. Ask Him to give you the ability to forgive Him and ask for His forgiveness. He still loves you, no matter how angry you’ve been with Him. He just wants a relationship with you, Amy. Are you ready to accept Him?

AMY: Honestly? I don’t know. I feel like I’m cheating God by accepting Him on my deathbed. (Esther reacts to the word “deathbed”.)

PASTOR ADAM: Honestly? You kind of are. But it really doesn’t matter to God. He’ll welcome your response no matter what stage of life you’re in. Yes, He’d love to show His glory through you your whole long life but He won’t turn you away now.

AMY: Can I think about it? It’s late and I’m tired. You should see that mom gets home alright. She looks like she’s nodding off already. Come back tomorrow.

PASTOR ADAM: Sure thing. See you tomorrow. I’ll wait for you in the hall, Esther (Goes off SL)

ESTHER (Tenderly scolding): Amy, you don’t know this is your deathbed. The doctors are very hopeful about this new treatment.

AMY (Not entirely agreeing with her in tone): I know. Hey Mom, I know if I ask him (Indicates Pastor Adam) he’ll give me some nice answer and he’ll talk for a long time again but I want to know tonight. Jesus rose from the dead, right? I remember that right from when you used to take me to church?

ESTHER: That’s right. Three days after He died He rose from the grave. Darling, I really hope you decide to follow Jesus.

AMY: Oh, I probably will. But you know me – have to do it my time and my way.

ESTHER: (Gently, but firmly) No Amy, you need to do it God’s way and I think the time is right now.

AMY: (Blinks at her mom in surprise, waits a moment) Ok Mom. How do I do this? What do I say?

(Music starts for True Love)

ESTHER: You say something like “Jesus, I know I’ve sinned against You and I’m sorry. I believe that You died on the cross to take away my sin and that You rose again. Please forgive my sins, come into me and make me a new person. Be Lord of my life now and forever.”

AMY: (Starts praying and fades out with start of song) Jesus, I know I’ve sinned against You and I’m sorry. I believe that You died on the cross to take away my sin and that You rose again…

Lights fade on Amy & Esther.

BAND/CHOIR:
Come close, listen to the story
About a love more faithful than the morning
The Father gave His only Son just to save us

The earth was shaking in the dark
All creation felt the Father’s broken heart
Tears were filling Heaven’s eyes
The day that true love died
The day that true love died

When blood and water hit the ground
Walls we couldn’t move came crashing down
We were free and made alive
The day that true love died
The day that true love died

Search your heart, you know you can’t deny it
Come on, lose your life just so you can find it
The Father gave His only Son just to save us

The earth was shaking in the dark
All creation felt the Father’s broken heart
Tears were filling Heaven’s eyes
The day that true love died
The day that true love died

When blood and water hit the ground
Walls we couldn’t move came crashing down
We were free and made alive
The day that true love died
The day that true love died

See, from His head, His hands, His feet
Sorrow and love flow mingled down;
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small:
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

Now Jesus is alive, Jesus is alive
Jesus is alive, Jesus is alive
Jesus is alive, oh, He is alive
He rose again

When blood and water hit the ground
Walls we couldn’t move came crashing down
We were free and made alive
The day that true love died
The day that true love died

Come close, listen to the story
JESUS: Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?

MARY: (Not quite turning, doesn’t look at Jesus) Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.

JESUS: Mary.

MARY: (Looks at Jesus, realizes it’s Him, falls on her face at His feet) Teacher!

JESUS: (Helping her up) Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”

(Mary nods and runs off the way she came. When she reaches the doors, the disciples come in, she exits).

JOHN: It is the Lord!

(The disciples come down the aisle, on stage and surround Jesus.)

JESUS: Simon, son of John, do you truly love me more than these?

PETER: Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.

JESUS: Feed my lambs. Simon son of John do you truly love me?

PETER: Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.

JESUS: Take care of my sheep. Simon son of John, do you love me?

PETER: (hurt) Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.

JESUS: Feed my sheep. It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

(JESUS ascends to heaven using some cool light effects probably. All the disciples stand and stare up at the ceiling. Two angels come and stand beside them.)

ANGEL: Men of Galilee, why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.

Scene 7

Video of Amy & Esther being happy.
Lights fade on Bible scene. Funeral director/people bring in casket and flowers in total silence from the back, Pastor Adam is there directing where to go. Amy wanders in, totally lost.

PASTOR ADAM: Here, let me get the lights.

FUNERAL DIRECTOR: So what happened to her?

PASTOR ADAM: Brain aneurysm. Her family didn’t even get to say goodbye.

FUNERAL DIRECTOR: Wow. That’s hard. Where do you want these?

PASTOR ADAM: Oh, right over there is fine. Thank you. (Sees Amy and goes over to her) Amy! How are you doing?

AMY: (Numb, staring at the casket) I still can’t believe she’s gone. She was my rock, the one thing I could always count on in life. We were just talking the other day about how life is going so well – I’m in remission, going to church, she just got a promotion at work. We got ice cream to celebrate. Then she just…fell. I thought she tripped and joked about her being clumsy. But she didn’t laugh. Why? Why would God do this to me? I believed in Him and this is how He treats me? I thought things would get better when I became a Christian. Everything was getting better and then this.

PASTOR ADAM: Amy, I don’t have answers for any of those questions. I wish I did. And I feel like any comfort I give would be trite and not very comforting at all.

AMY: Well try. Say something to make this feel just a tiny bit better.

PASTOR ADAM: Alright. This isn’t the end.

AMY: What?

PASTOR ADAM: Esther believed in God. This isn’t the end for her. She’s in heaven right now rejoicing with Jesus. This isn’t the end for you either. You will live on, missing your mom with every fiber of your being almost every second of every day. And when you die you will go to heaven too. You and Esther will be together until Christ returns to take all Christians, the Church, home to heaven with Him as His bride.

AMY: Wait? Jesus marries us? That’s weird and kinda creepy.

PASTOR ADAM: Throughout the New Testament it talks about Jesus loving the church as a husband loves his wife and taking care of the church. One day all the figurative statements in the Bible will come to pass, there will be an actual wedding and you, as a part of the church, will be the bride. You will be with Jesus forever and you will find all your satisfaction and joy in Him.

AMY: Right. (Beat) So what do I do now?

PASTOR ADAM: Live. (Music starts) Live even though it hurts to right now. Live for the God who loves you and sacrificed for you and someday you and your mom will worship Him together. Make God your rock, the one thing in life you can always count on. Live for the day when Jesus will come to take you and the rest of His dearly beloved church, His bride, to be with Him forever.

AMY: We’ll see.

Lights down, Adam & Amy push casket to front right corner in sanctuary, exit back north door.

BAND/CHOIR:
This is the story of the Son of God
Hanging on the cross for me
But it ends with a bride and groom
And a wedding by a glassy sea
O death where is your sting
Cause I’ll be there singing
Holy Holy Holy
Is the Lord

This is the story of a bride in white
Waiting on her wedding day
Anticipation welling up inside
While the groom is crowned as king
O death where is your sting
Cause we’ll be there singing
Holy Holy Holy is the Lord

Holy Holy Holy Holy Holy Holy
Is the Lord Almighty
Holy Holy Holy Holy Holy Holy
Is the Lord Almighty
Who was and is and is to come
Who was and is and is to come

This is the story of the Son of God
Hanging on the cross for me
And it ends with a bride and groom
And a wedding by a glassy sea

This is the story of a bride in white
Singing on her wedding day
Of the God who was and is to stand before a bride who sings
Holy Holy Holy Holy Holy Holy is the Lord Almighty

(At apex of song I’d like to work in the bridge from Chris Tomlin’s “I Will Rise” simultaneously with “Holy (Wedding Day)”:

And I hear the voice of many angels sing,
“Worthy is the Lamb”
And I hear the cry of every longing heart,
“Worthy is the Lamb”
THE END.
